A Celebration of Sisterhood: “Girls High Tea” Commemorates Women’s Month in Harare

The last Friday of women’s month, buzzed with an atmosphere of celebration as the “Girls High Tea” event unfolded. A unique and memorable way to commemorate Women’s Month. The event, held at Cresta Lodge Hotel, brought together women of all ages and backgrounds, united by a shared spirit of sisterhood and a desire to honour the achievements and contributions of women and girls.

Apostolic Women Empowerment Trust (AWET) had the opportunity to attend this Girls’ High Tea event organised by PLAN International Zimbabwe and with funding from the Uk in Zimbabwe, under theme: For all Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment. To celebrate International Women’s Month.

The event was  delightful blend of tradition and empowerment, with the classic high tea experience serving as a backdrop for a powerful message of unity and resilience. Guests were treated to a selection of delectable treats, from dainty finger sandwiches and scones with a clotted cream and jam to an array of colourful cakes and pastries.

Beyond the culinary delights, the “Girls High Tea”  offered a range of engaging activities and inspiring conversations. A panel discussion featuring local women leaders and entrepreneurs provided a platform for sharing stories of success and overcoming challenges with topical issues on Smart Saving: Building Financial Independence for Young Women, Sexual Reproductive Health Rights, and Glow with Confidence: Essential Personal Hygiene and Grooming Tips for Young Women. A craft station allowed attendees to express their creativity and connect with each other through shared artistic endeavours.

The “Girls High Tea” served as a powerful platform for celebrating sisterhood and fostering a sense of community among women. The event created a space for women to connect, share their experience, and inspire each other to reach their full potential.

This year, in celebration of women’s month, PLAN International Zimbabwe took a delightful detour from the day-to-day in order to orchestrate a tea party that has left an indelible mark on everyone who attended.

Led by the PLAN International’s Programs Team, the unique gathering was a moment of appreciation for the strides women and girls have made and the roads yet to be travelled toward gender equality. Driven by the desire to provide a beautiful and cohesive experience, the tea party aimed to foster a sense of community and special recognition among the women and girls in urban areas. And judging by the response of the attendees, the result was a resounding success!

“It was perfect and special,” summarised Sharai Chamwadoro AWET’s Programs Manager. “Thanks to Plan International Zimbabwe for putting this together.” It was my first time attending an event like this, and it was amazing to see how every little detail was taken care of,” Sharai said. “The desserts were stunning and delicious a real treat that made the day feel extra fancy. Being there made me feel lucky to be a woman.”

As the lead organisation, implementing programs designed to enable communities to improve the lives of the most marginalized children, Plan International Zimbabwe,  Gender and Safeguarding Officer shared her motivation for organising such an occasion. “We wanted to create an event that not only celebrated the women in our organisation in a different way than past years but also had us all engage in learning more about the struggles and movement going on globally,”  Harriete explained.
