Ending Child Marriages

1. AWET supported by UNICEF funded by DANIDA in 2016 mobilized 500 women from diverse Apostolic churches to attend an inaugural conference in Gweru on Ending Child Marriage focusing on effects of Child Marriage.

2. AWET supported by UNICEF funded by DANIDA in 2016 – 2017 advocated on ending Child Marriage in a campaign held in 13 districts

Child Marriage, Gender Based Violence and foster environmental sustainability
Culture Actions Project
AWET funded by Embassy of Sweden on CultureActions Project 2017-2020 focusing on Child Marriage, Gender Based Violence and foster environmental sustainability in the face of Climate Change in 3 districts Mazowe, Makoni and Chipinge. The projected targeted girls and young women to debunk culture-based arguments and societal norms that dis-empower them and used a Creative Knowledge Toolkit and used advocacy and awareness campaigns to mitigate the social ills.

Child Marriage, Gender Based Violence and foster environmental sustainability
Culture Actions Project
AWET funded by Christian Aid in 2018 on Gender Based Violence on the project “Action for Apostolic Women and Girls”. The project aimed at achieving
- Prevention towards GBV including Child Marriage.
- Change behaviour and attitudes to enhance positive parenting and reduce violence in homes.
- Use innovative approaches and methods to engage different stakeholders and influencers nationwide.

Spotlight Initiative
AWET in 2019 – 2022 implemented supported by UNICEF the Spotlight Initiative the global partnership between the European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN) to end violence against women and girls. The goal is to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls, especially those who are marginalized and vulnerable focusing on changing gender inequitable social norms, attitudes and behaviours at the community and individual levels in 21 districts and 2 locations.

Emergency Response
AWET responded to Cyclone Idai (both emergency response and recovery) 2019-2020 funded by Christian Aid Zimbabwe reached 1350 households with food and non-food items for 6 months including maize meal, sugar, dried fish, salt, cooking oil, cooking pots, spoons and plates. Communities were supported to recover by accessing safe drinking water and sanitation facilities to mitigate disease outbreaks and capacitate communities with economic support by establishing nutrition gardens in 3 districts Chimanimani, Chipinge and Buhera.

Youth and Women Empowerment
AWET supported by Christian Aid funded by the Irish Electric Aid in 2020 – 2022 supported the Youth and Women on Smart Agriculture – improved crop quality and yields and water conservation. Growing of trees and establishing of nurseries in Shurugwi district titled “Youth and Women Empowerment”

Comprehensive innovative approach to community-based child protection interventions, aimed at eliminating harmful practices in Apostolic and Interfaith communities
AWET Implemented a Child Protection project in 2022 funded by UNICEF titled “Comprehensive innovative approach to community-based child protection interventions, aimed at eliminating harmful practices in Apostolic and Interfaith communities.” The project aim was to challenge social norms shifting gender relations and change in knowledge and behaviors towards child protection.
In a bid to combat child marriages AWET conducted Capacity building trainings of 1560 BCFs as well as 1560 diverse Apostolic leaders on child protection issues as well as disability inclusion. The co-creation trainings impacted knowledge on Child Protection, PSS, AAP, PSEA, and Safeguarding and Disability Inclusion in 13 targeted districts.

Interfaith COVID-19 Prevention and Vaccination Campaign
With funding from UNICEF, AWET rolled out Interfaith COVID-19 Prevention and Vaccination Campaign in 52 districts with the following key objectives to sensitize key Interfaith stakeholders on COVID-19 Vaccine communication for addressing CAB fatigue, vaccine hesitancy (including AEFI, rumour, vaccine misinformation) as well as managing vaccine eagerness. Identifying Interfaith vaccination champions and creating/linking them to platforms to support COVID-19 vaccination drive. Leveraging existing Interfaith platforms to create and sustain community dialogue around importance of COVID-19 Vaccination and sustaining COVID Appropriate Behaviours. Leverage faith leaders to support access to essential services by women and children in the implementation of the C-19 Prevention & Vaccination campaign.

Interfaith integrated Multi Hazard response
AWET was funded by UNICEF and implemented a project titled Interfaith integrated Multi Hazard response (Cholera, Dysentery, Cyclone, COVID-19 prevention, and vaccination promotion) in hotspots and zero dose communities. The Goal was to enhance communities’ resilience on handling emergency situations and multi hazard response through strengthening community ward level structures. The Specific Objectives were, to prevent morbidity, mortality and disability related to vaccine preventable diseases, to put up structures (care groups) in the community to enhance child protection issues including vaccination and create demand for vaccination.

Between August 2018 and July 2023, Plan International UK, and its partners (Plan International Zimbabwe (PIZ), The Open University (OU), Christian Blind Mission (CBM) UK, the Apostolic Women’s Empowerment Trust (AWET), ECONET, and Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education) implemented the SAGE programme in Zimbabwe. The programme has supported more than 13,400 out-of-school, highly marginalized adolescent girls in 11 districts in Zimbabwe to improve their learning outcomes and assist their transition into formal education, vocational training, or employment. SAGE identified seven sub-groups of girls to specifically target support for and tailored its interventions in line with their needs. These included married girls, young mothers, girls who have never been to school, girls from the Apostolic community, girls with disabilities.

SAGE component of (TEACH)
SAGE component of Teacher Effectiveness and Equitable Access to for all Children (TEACH) Funded by FCDO Zimbabwe (2023-2026) (3 districts) was a continuation of the SAGE project and was looking at, Accelerated Teaching and Learning (ATL): Providing out-of-school girls with high-quality, accelerated learning in 88 Community-Based Learning Hubs and eliminating barriers to education through free, accessible, inclusive, and flexible learning opportunities.

SAGE component of (TEACH)
AWET is implementing a Community Health and Sanitation projects funded by Anglo-American 2022-2030 in Shurugwi. The focus of the UNKI-funded intervention was twofold, firstly, Sanitation where AWET was responsible for the construction of 567 double pit latrines for (567 households) in rural disadvantaged communities. This target was surpassed as AWET ended up constructing 621 double pit latrines. The second aspect of the implementation was Health promotion, training hygiene educators and through them increasing hygiene awareness of communities. The third component consisted of providing clean and safe water to beneficiaries which UNKI was responsible for.

Comprehensive Sexuality Education Projects
AWET (2019 – 2024) implemented 2 Comprehensive Sexuality Education projects titled Strengthening support for and addressing opposition to Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) through engagement with faith-based organizations funded by Act Ubumbano in (2019 and 2020), then UNESCO (2024) through Faith2 Action in Gweru, Mutasa, Harare District. The program aimed to equip individuals, particularly religious leaders, parents, Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), youth and young adults, with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to help Apostolic adolescents make informed decisions about their sexual health and well-being. Comprehensive sexuality education BCFs training helped BCFs feel more confident and equipped to provide Apostolic boys and girls with the knowledge and skills they need to make informed decisions about their sexual health and well-being. AWET was targeting issues to do with Awareness, Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices within the Apostolic community that cause harm.
