EPI @ 50

Zimbabwe celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) together with World Health Day on October 3, 2024. This belated commemoration was a major turning point in its public health history. While emphasizing the work that remains to be done to improve health for all Zimbabweans, the dual commemoration offered a chance to consider the advancements made in the nation's health and well-being.

Dr Douglas Mombeshora, the Minister of Health and Child Care highlighted the country's achievements in EPI, including the eradication of smallpox, polio-free certification, and successful outbreak responses. The Minister also acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead, such as disparities in access to immunization and the rise of misinformation. He called for collaborative efforts to address these barriers and ensure that every Zimbabwean has access to life-saving vaccines.
